Bearded Dragon Facts for Kids
Hi! I'm Hank, a 5-year-old bearded dragon — and I'm here to tell you all about my favorite animal: me! God made bearded dragons with some pretty amazing features. Check these out!
We come from Australia
Bearded dragons live in the deserts and dry woodlands of Australia. We love warm, sunny spots — that's why pet beardies need a basking lamp!
Our 'beard' is a defense trick
When a bearded dragon feels threatened, it puffs out the spiky skin under its chin and it turns dark. That big scary beard makes us look much tougher than we really are!
We wave to say hello
Bearded dragons lift one front leg and slowly wave it in a circle. It's our way of saying 'I see you, and I come in peace' to other dragons.
We eat our veggies (and bugs!)
Bearded dragons are omnivores. We munch on leafy greens, squash, and berries — plus crickets and worms for protein. A healthy beardie eats a rainbow!
We can run on two legs
When we really need to move, bearded dragons can rear up and sprint on our back legs. It looks as silly as it sounds!
We change color with our mood
Our skin can get lighter or darker depending on temperature and mood. A dark beard can mean 'back off' — or sometimes just 'I'm warming up!'
